Choosing a splashback colour can be one of the hardest decisions when renovating a kitchen.
Unlike paint, changing a splashback isn't something most people want to do twice, so it's worth taking a little extra time to make sure you're happy with the colour before placing your order.
Here are a few things we recommend considering:
1. Look at Samples in Your Own Home
Colours can look completely different depending on the lighting in a space.
A colour that looks perfect in a showroom may appear lighter, darker, warmer, or cooler once it's installed in your kitchen. That's why we always recommend taking samples home and looking at them throughout the day before making a final decision.
2. Consider Your Benchtop
Your splashback and benchtop are often the two largest visual features in a kitchen.
A colour that works beautifully on its own may not work as well once it's sitting next to your benchtop. When comparing options, try viewing your samples directly against your benchtop material rather than looking at them in isolation.
3. Think About Natural and Artificial Light
The amount of natural light a room receives can have a huge impact on how a colour appears.
A north-facing kitchen flooded with sunlight may suit a different colour palette than a kitchen that receives limited natural light. It's also worth checking how colours look under your evening lighting, especially if your kitchen is a space where the family gathers after dark.
4. Don't Forget About Cabinet Colours
Cabinetry, flooring, wall colours and even appliances can all influence how a splashback colour feels once installed.
Sometimes the safest option isn't necessarily matching everything perfectly, but choosing a colour that complements the other finishes in the room.
5. Trends Come and Go
While it's always nice to know what's popular, remember that you'll likely be looking at your splashback for many years to come.
Rather than choosing a colour purely because it's on trend, consider what you'll still enjoy living with in five or ten years' time.
Not Sure? That's Completely Normal
Choosing a splashback colour can feel surprisingly difficult, and you're certainly not the first person to take home half a dozen samples before making a decision.
That's one of the reasons we have a range of splashback samples available in our Darfield showroom. Taking a few options home and seeing them in your own kitchen is often the easiest way to narrow down the choices and feel confident in your decision.
