What Size Pet Door Does My Dog Need?

One of the most common questions we get is, "What size pet door should I choose for my dog?"

While it might seem straightforward, choosing the right size can make a big difference to how easily your dog uses their new door. Too small, and they'll be squeezing through uncomfortably. Too large, and you're often paying for a bigger unit than you actually need.

As a general rule, your dog should be able to walk through without ducking excessively or rubbing their sides on the frame. It's also important to remember that puppies grow, so if you've got a young dog at home, it's worth considering their adult size before deciding.

Different pet door models are designed for different sized pets, from cats and small breeds to larger dogs. Features such as microchip access, magnetic locking and weather seals may also influence which model is the best fit for your home.

Not Sure? Bring Your Dog In!

One of the advantages of our Darfield showroom is that we have a range of pet doors on display.

If you're unsure which size will suit your dog, bring them along and let them try the display models for themselves. It's often the easiest way to see what feels comfortable and avoid any guesswork.

Plus, if we're honest, the office team loves meeting your dogs. Productivity has been known to take a noticeable dip whenever a furry visitor arrives, as everyone suddenly finds a reason to leave their desk and come say hello.

Can Pet Doors Be Installed in Glass?

In many cases, yes.

Pet doors can be installed into glass, including single glazing and many double-glazed units. The best option will depend on your existing glass and the type of pet door you're after. In some situations, a new glass panel may need to be manufactured specifically to accommodate the pet door.
